PTSD and Substance Abuse

After an extremely shocking event(s), an individual may have flashbacks, nightmares, difficulties with falling asleep, suffer from negative changes in thinking and mood, etc. This is called Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). It’s common among people in the military, as you can see in the infographic. But it may also develop during a peaceful time. For civilians, a deadly car crash, sexual assault, child abuse or neglect, or abusive relationships can provoke PTSD. AddictionResource authors say that people with traumatic disorders are likely to smoke, drink alcohol, or take drugs and consequently develop addiction.
